Hawk, Doctor Harry Emmit

Dr. H. E. Hawk Ad

     Harry Emmit Hawk was born on 24 June 1874 in Saint Paris, Champaign County, Ohio. He was the son of Edward and Laura B. Neiswonger Hawk. He spent his childhood on Plumb Street his home town. For most of his childhood, his father was employed as a teacher. 
     As an adult, Harry would travel to Lexington, Kentucky to study dentistry. He would eventually graduate from the University of Kentucky with his degree. Then, he returned to Ohio.
     On 2 September 1912, he married his first wife, Nina L. Jones. The couple was married in Summit, Ohio. Nina was the daughter of John M. and Rose L. Kincaid Cline. Their marriage lasted less than four years. 
     On 3 July 1916in Franklin, Ohio, Harry married again. This time his wife was named Mabel Wynne Sapp. Born on 1 January 1881 in Vinton County, Ohio, Mabel was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Tatman Wynne. The newlyweds chose to live in Portsmouth, Ohio where Dr. Harry E. Hawk opened his own dental practice on Sixth Street.
     Like his first marriage, Harry’s second marriage did not last long. Mabel Wynne Hawk died on 20 March 1925 in Portsmouth, Ohio. The cause of death was acute septic nephritis or kidney failure.
     By 1930, Dr. Hawk had remarried for a third and final time. His new wife was born Ellen Compton. The couple lived at 304 ½ Chillicothe Street, Portsmouth, Ohio. 
     Shortly thereafter, Harry and Ellen moved to Ironton, Ohio. They would live at 519 Railroad Street. Dr. Hawk’s dental office was located at the corner of Third Street and Park Avenue. Harry would continue to practice dentistry for thirty-five years in Ironton.  While in Ironton, Harry would become a member of the Elks as well as the Methodist Church. 
     After his retirement, the couple moved to Buckeye Lake in Licking County, Ohio. It is there Dr. Harry Emmit Hawk died on 13 February 1949. He was buried in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland, Kentucky.
